Style & Music

As mentioned in my previous post, Fashion and Style go hand in hand as does the beach and bikinis, that’s no secret. But what is also fitting and blends nicely into this circle, forming an everso fabulous trio, is music (and a frozen drink if you’re still at the beach - lol). Style Icons in the music industry have been a plenty dating back in time since before I was born. If I have to pinpoint the age where my sense of style and appreciation for the finer things (other than sports jerseys and rock t-shirts) and music took a turn, I guess I would have to say 17. Right around the same time as any teenager finds his/her way with music.
Music plays an important role in all of our lives. We all have a favorite artist(s) that we have either idolized or perhaps still do. We all have a favorite song(s) that brings us up when we’re down or brings us back down memory lane or gives us the right jolt of adrenaline rush during a workout or before a sports game….and let’s be honest, how many of us growing up liked an artist so much that their style had some influence over how we dressed? You have the Boy George hat look of then that still finds its way into some looks of today (which further solidifies such statement of style being timeless) and then of course you have Pharrell with his hat styles that we see around quite a bit for current looks of today. Then of course you have the Beatles dressed up in day-glo-colored uniforms for the cover of their 1967 album, ''Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,'' they introduced a long era of makeshift military attire as a costume of hippie rebellion. The military look is still alive and vibrant to this day. I can go on and mention many other examples but this post would never end. The list of Style Icons in the music biz from yesteryear and current are far too many to name all, but here are a few notable ones where I think all would agree….Madonna, Lady Gaga, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Diana Ross, André 3000, Duran Duran, Grace Jones, Gwen Stefani, Rihanna, Jimi Hendrix, Beyoncé, Kanye and Prince just to name a few.
Music artists are dressed by designers (hence the Courtney Love and Versace story along with the Madonna and Jean-Paul Gaultier story) and before you know it the looks they sport becomes mainstream fashion. Their style was just as mainstream then as it is now. It's like everything in life, everything comes around full circle with a little tweak here and there to spice things up and give them a sense of evolvement. However, one of the biggest thing that is very alive and exists today that was non-existent then is the the social media frenzy and the endless avenues and possibilities of e-commerce. Music and Style has been there all along and it will always evolve and continue to be.
I now share with you, somewhat of a guilty pleasure and an homage to music and its Style Icons of then and now. As many Style Icons who sing these songs, there are just as many stylish music videos and in no particular order, here are 10 good ones for you to enjoy…. (and yes, there are 3 Rihanna videos - what can I say, she's kinda' easy on the eyes and I like her music - ;-)

- George Michael (Freedom '90)
- Duran Duran (Rio)
- Rihanna (We Found Love)
- Guns N' Roses (November Rain)
